About Me

My photo
From the small town I call home, Philippines
Hello, I'm Chai and you've never probably heard of me until now. I may be familiar to you because I've met you once when our souls crossed paths. In my past life, I was probably a princess living in Old England, or a World War II chronicler assigned to document the devastation in what is now called Turkey. I may have been a street urchin or a painter or an old Hollywood actress once. But the life I've chosen to hold on to is the life I'm living in right now and I'm glad I can share it with you.:)

To the Fairest of Them All...

Somewhere up above in the heavens, a red carpet is rolled down in welcome of a half-German, half-Filipina stunner who shall add up to paradise's lovely ensemble of angels. And in the arena where the carpet ends, she is met with a thunderous round of applause from God's fascinating winged-creatures. And in this place, she didn't get hurt, she will never feel pain ever again, and she belongs.

In memoriam...

Melody Gersbach
November 18, 1985-August 21, 2010
Beauty Queen. Daughter. Sister. Friend

When a person you love dies, the hardest question to face would always be..."What will happen tomorrow?"

It is so very unfortunate that my first entry after what seemed like a long period of time would have to be another eulogy-like piece for a beautiful person that thousands have come to know and love.

Reigning Bb. Pilipinas International 2009, Ms. Melody Gersbach has joined the arms of our loving Creator at past 11am today due to a vehicular accident that happened in Bula, Camarines Sur.

Please take a moment of your time to say a short and silent prayer for the eternal repose of her beautiful soul.

Sudden deaths are always unfair, especially when the person we've lost is someone who was only part of an unfortunate circumstance and doesn't deserve the pain nor the tragedy that has caused her immediate earthly fleeting. However, death is something that we all have to face in this lifetime. For some, it might be the end, but it is actually the beginning of a new adventure.

There is something utterly riveting and heartbreaking in the untimely passing of someone you weren't particularly close to, but knew of your existence. Because somehow, you take pride in the fact that somehow, you were part of each other's lives no matter how significant or otherwise your role may have been in theirs.

To the world, she is a beauty queen. But to most of us who has witnessed her humble beginnings, she was a low-profile girl even during high school who would've attracted attention even though she wasn't trying to because of her natural beauty. Yet most of us will know her as Maggie's sister. And we know for a fact that she adores and loves her ate very much, and there probably is no reason for anyone to not love her, that's why hundreds of others are too saddened by her death.

All across the globe, someone is mourning her passing; be it a relative, a friend, a beauty queen crazy fan, or just random strangers who might have heard of her. But the people who are saddened the most will be her family, especially Maggie. Please also take a moment of your time to pray for them so that the Lord will give them the strength to live by for the duration of their loss.

Earlier this evening, a friend asked me to extend her condolences to the Gersbach family and I found comfort in her words when she said,

"Look at it this way: All the good ones are being saved."

And it's true. We all know for a fact that wherever Ate Mel might be, she is now happy and with the Lord.

It still tears my heart when I see the outpour of "condolence" and "Rest in Peace" messages coming out of my Facebook newsfeed in both Maggie's and Ate Mel's pages. And seeing stuff like this in the internet doesn't help either:

But ironically, I found the positive light of it all through this.

What better way to be commemorated than at the time of her youth's prime! While most people die old, bitter and gray, Ate Mel left the earth young, beautiful and loved. It wouldn't be surprising to all of us if she sports a tiara and the finest evening gown and the hottest stilletos with her angel's wings as she continues life in God's kingdom.

This would never be goodbye, Bb. Pilipinas International 2009 Melody Gersbach. It's just "See you up there!"

Wear your crown high and proud in heaven, Ate Mel. It is not only a testament of you being a winner while you were still alive, but it further personifies that you are indeed, a queen no matter where you are.

Your death might have been tragic, but we take comfort in knowing you are with God.

Until then, we will imagine you waving that pageant wave and smiling that winning smile of yours as you bid the hardships of this earth farewell while you ascend to the heavens. Spread your beauty, kindness and grace up there, Ate Mel. We already had our share of those while you were still here. It's time for you to make the other guardians fall in love with you.

See you soon, Ate Mel. You live in the hearts of those who loved you.

We will always remember you this way.

Too Young, Too Soon

In Memoriam:
JAN ABBEY PALMA
(November 1989-July 2010)

In another not-so-random news, I just heard the shock of my year when high school batch mates and friends from St. Agnes' Academy informed me earlier today that Jan Abbey Palma has already been welcomed by the Lord's choirs of angels in heaven.

Apparently, she's had a history of weak lungs and asthma, and she was found unconscious in her bedroom around lunchtime of July 1st. Other than being a fresh college graduate, she was supposed to take up the board exams this Saturday. But it's already too late for that.:(

...

In life, we are always presented with a bunch of ironies that, most often than not, we choose to ignore or not take seriously because sometimes, it doesn't directly affect us. However, death has a harsh way of making us realize in the end that there is no harm in trying to care, because at the end of it all, something we'd like to call as regret comes knocking in our hearts and well, just proves it's really ironic.

My high school life (or what I remember of it, at least) came by in such a blur that even I have a hard time comprehending as to how I went from then to now. There are a lot of people I used to mingle with and they were all super close to me. There were also a handful whom I never got the chance to get close to, but I wanted to, because I can see the sincerity in their eyes and the kindness in their hearts. Abbey was one of them. I always see her hanging around with just an intimate circle of friends--she was never loud or outspoken or annoying or talkative like me; she was someone who didn't attract attention to herself like I used to do back then. In rare occasions, when I'd pass by the senior wing and we'd see each other, I'll give her a smile and a small friendly wave, and she'd always generously give it back.

I never had any distinct memories with her. But the most important imprint she has left in my mind is her sincere and warm smile, and I will always remember her for that.

FOR ABBEY:

Imagine the shock and pain of us who used to know you when we found out about your passing. But I bet, the grief and sorrow and longing that your parents have right now is not even an iota of what we're all feeling right now. Yes, we lost a friend, and an acquaintance in you. But for your mom and dad, they have lost a daughter--

a daughter whom they have raised for two decades, in loving hopes
that she'd be able to reach her goals someday;
a daughter they have loved so much and wished to triumph;
a daughter, that someday, they were supposed to willingly but tearfully give away
to some lucky guy to be his wife.

It's an indescribable pain, for any parent to see their child pass away before them. It will take weeks, months, years or even an entire lifetime for them to get over their sadness at your sudden loss. But I know, and I am sure, that they shall take comfort in knowing that they once had you, and they have taught you well, and that they have raised a beautiful miracle in you.

As I write this, I find myself shedding a few unchecked tears because I know that death is such an unfriendly part of this life. But it's a reality we all have to face sooner or later in this lifetime. My heart goes out to your family and everyone you have left behind.

While everyone here is mourning your departure, we all know that you are somewhere in the loving arms of our Creator, and smiling down upon us and wishing you could just tell us you are okay and happy in your new home.

Maybe I wasn't given a chance to know your life's story, or even know what made you happy or sad, but I take pride in this: I once knew you, and I was once a regular recipient of your radiant smile.

It's not goodbye, my dear Abbey. It's see you soon!:) And maybe you weren't given a chance to take your board exams this Saturday, but unlike most of us, you have already received and passed the highest honor anyone can ever bestow upon us--AN ANGEL OF GOD.

And for you, who might be reading this, I would like to request a moment of your time to pause for a few moments of silence and offer a short but meaningful prayer for the heavenly repose of the soul of JAN ABBEY PALMA--a daughter, a sister, a friend.

Is There Such Thing As Dog Heaven?

Today, we mourn the loss of a member of our family.
As of 7:00A.M, May 3rd 2010, our dog Presley died due to asphyxiation. It was his own leash that killed him.

May 3rd was supposed to be a good day for me and my family. It's the birthday of my best friend Theza and I've been looking forward to going to her house and celebrating with her. It's also a holiday. So my parents were both home and they had something to look forward too--the arrival of Presidentiable Noynoy Aquino and Vice Presidentiable Mar Roxas. We've been wanting to join the motorcade eversince word broke out that they were paying a visit in our town. We were all excited. We were supposed to be happy.

It's funny how unlikely things turn out sometimes.

This morning our mom woke us all up with a start, telling us frantically about Presley.

"Namatay si Presley!" She was hysterical.

My siblings and I woke up and no one believed or wanted to believe what we were hearing. Presley seemed to be so alive only the night before. What happened to him? Apparently by asphyxiation. He got tangled in his own leash. The very same leash he's had since almost a year ago.

You can just imagine the shock and pain we were experiencing. My siblings didn't move for a while but the urgency of the situation instantly had them running down from the room. And I just stood by the top of the stairs, staring into space. I really really can't believe it.

At first, I didn't want to see his lifeless face and energetic self lying cold and dead on the ground so I went back to bed and cried silent tears. It wasn't until my dad went to our room that made me decide that I had to force myself to bid my Presley a final goodbye.

You see, my dad is a normally tough person. He's our rock. Nothing gets to him. But when he saw Presley dead, he broke down too. He's attached to him because he's the first person Presley will always remember because my dad bought him. He was the one who took him home. Everytime dad gets home from work, Presley will always be excited; standing on his two hind legs and reaching out to dad until he pets him. I could imagine how hard it is for my dad. Presley is one of his stress relievers.

When I saw Presley, that just did it for me. Tears really fell unchecked. It was like losing a member of your family. He's the most charming dog I've known my entire life. Seeing him lifeless brought me a kind of pain which I will never be able to recover from. It sucked even more when I saw daddy trying to revive him by shaking him and calling out "Presley! Presley!" several times. It was literally like a scene from a movie.

I touched Presley and his fur felt the same; it was still soft but unlike when he was alive, he'd respond to my gesture by rubbing his head back on my palm and his tail would wag fast. His being motionless was proof enough that he was gone for good. As I watched my eldest brother dig a grave for our baby Presley, I continued crying. Life wasn't fair. We didn't have enough chances with him. My siblings and I were planning several trips which we would take Presley with us but none of those pushed through because he was gone too soon. Heck, this might sound crazy but we don't even have pictures with him. We just thought that we would have enough time for that because he was a healthy dog, he never gave us problems regarding his health. How wrong we were. Because apparently in this world we live in, life is too short. Even for those we just consider as pets.

As I write this blog, I am still crying and I'm having a hard time seeing things right because the tears are blurring my vision. It's that hard to accept. I have grown so fond of Presley because I was the one who named him. When I had a chance in the past, I took him with us when we went jogging. And this summer, when I was bored, I'd take him out of the house for a walk because I know that he was tired of the house too. And he's hard to forget simply because we have treated him like a member of our family.

Who ever said dogs are man's best friend had no idea how much of an understatement he was making.

It was time to bury him. As dad laid him on the ground, I looked back on the times I always bid him goodbye every time the family was going somewhere. He seemed okay with it. After all, he knew we were coming back for him. But as he was buried, I muttered, "Good bye Presley." I realized that it would be the last of a thousand times I'll ever get to do that. And this time, it's the other way around--now he's the one leaving but we will never be okay with it because we know he's never coming back.

As my good friend Pacific told me as I shared my anguish on Facebook,

"Such is life. Which is why dogs don't hate us when we hurt them, their lives end seven times faster than us, they don't have the time. So they spend their years loving their owners unconditionally. :)"

Is there such thing as dog heaven? Because I honestly think there is.

I comfort myself and my little sister by telling her that I'd like to think thatPresley

has just gone to a permanent vacation. And where he is, he's always being pampered and experiencing the life of dog royalty--the most wonderful massage, a nice foot spa, excellent grooming and best of all,the dog food never runs out. It is in this paradise wherehe never got hurt.

And in this place, along with millions of other loved puppies who were gone too soon, he is HAPPY.

Farewell, Presley. We will miss you. Please know that we will think about you everyday that you're not with us. We love you very much. I know we'll see you soon baby.

Seek and you shall find...
