Hello, I'm Chai and you've never probably heard of me until now. I may be familiar to you because I've met you once when our souls crossed paths. In my past life, I was probably a princess living in Old England, or a World War II chronicler assigned to document the devastation in what is now called Turkey. I may have been a street urchin or a painter or an old Hollywood actress once. But the life I've chosen to hold on to is the life I'm living in right now and I'm glad I can share it with you.:)

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse

So I am aware that this review is a week delayed, but it's not like I'm such an in demand movie critic with actual readers waiting for my opinion on the film.

Anyway, I saw it last Saturday with my high school best friends (and movie buddies!) in hopes of getting my money's worth and being un-disappointed with the much anticipated threequel.

I'm not really known for having the patience to do brief summaries and the like, so I won't include here what the story is about. I am under the impression that you, who might be reading is, is also a fan, so no need to elaborate I guess! But if you aren't, well, there's always our good, reliable friend Google.:)
Here goes:

I'll head on straight to mentioning what I liked and didn't like from the movie.

But first, I would like to say that Eclipse is my favorite from the series, so I was anticipating the release of its interpretation on screen. I can't really say that it had been that excellent to receive such a high honor, but it wouldn't be fair to say I hated it either. So my likeness for it is somewhere in the middle--it was good, and it didn't suck either.

And for the record, can I just say that the change in director is a blessing in disguise, since we don't have to face anymore of that woman Hardwicke and her weirdness.

So let me break it down for 'ya in perspective:

  • Screenplay
If you ask me, Summit should really consider firing Melissa Rosenberg because she basically ruined the past three movies for the rest of us. No matter how adorable some of the lines had been, it really didn't do justice to the actual novel. It's not really important that they get everything right; just focusing on some of the more relevant details would've been more appreciated for sure. And although Eclipse is, by far, the closest one to the book, I still hate this joke of a screenwriter who has to destroy the identity of the novel.

So on a scale of one to ten, I'd give the screenplay around seven. And that's your fault, Melissa Rosenberg.

  • Acting
I wouldn't want to dwell too much on this, because you've probably heard of various feedback regarding how the lead actors and everyone else has performed, but can I just say that some of them made me wanna go yawn during their act. Some of them lacked the personality of the characters they were playing. Go figure.

One to ten, I'd give acting (or their bland delivery of dialogue for the purpose of interpretation--whatever works), a five. Sorry, I've been merciful before, thinking that they'd still have room for improvement, but that will never happen I guess. Unless they totally surprise us in Breaking Dawn, then, that'll be better.:)

  • Direction
David Slade has salvaged what little beauty that irksome Rosenberg has done to the movie. If you ask me, he's one of the best things that Summit has included in the franchise. His execution, while not completely flawless, is a lot better compared to what Hardwicke has done for Twilight and some of the minor things that Weitz has overlooked in New Moon (for instance, that blue marker in the break up scene). Although I wasn't able to re-watch Eclipse yet, I haven't seen any of the failures that the past two directors have done. Kudos to the continuity, because Slade has incorporated some of the things that the fans may have been expecting (like the vampire bite on Bella's wrist from Twilight, and that scar from the disaster that was Bella's birthday from NM).

Slade gets a nine for direction.:)

  • Special Effects
The CGI werewolves had been believable, but I think Weitz did a better job. The shifting of the actors from their human form to their wolf form was more smooth. Thank God I haven't seen any harnesses, though.

As far as effects go, I don't remember anything that needs to be given more credit other than the CGI werewolves. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Well, it's up to you to decide.:) That is, if you have seen the movie already.

This one gets an eight from me.

  • Musical Scoring
I guess you have to be a Music major or something to really know the rudiments of film scoring. But if you're an ordinary fan, I'd say it was kind of great. Everything was appropriate, nothing too irrelevant to the "dark" side of the movie. Although, I must say that evers ince Paramore bailed out on making anymore songs for the movie, I failed to see the beauty of the soundtrack and everything in between after that.

To be fair, I'm giving it an eight.

  • Camera Shots and Movement
The use of close ups had been irrelevant for me in some points. Sometimes, it even bordered painful to watch when they did a tight frame on a certain actor's face because you can literally see their pores, the evidence of zits and the certain spots where the guys missed shaving their mustache or something. And in some of the close ups, the camera was a little shaky. I wish they used the aid of a tripod. And when they did long shots, it was just right, because some scenes didn't appear like they wanted the characters in the frame to appear microscopic or something. They didn't exaggerate some of the shots, that's for sure.

I'd give this aspect a seven.

  • Production Design
Production design meshed beautifully with the scenes. Nothing insignificant, that much I can say. But they have to stop using that meadow. I know, it's important that they do, because after all, it's where Bella and Edward first got to know each other deeply, but whatever. The scenes they do there come across really really cheesy. Anything major sweet becomes icky sometimes, even for me, who's a confessed Twi-hard.

This one gets a nine.
...

I had been thinking about criticizing their special focus on some of the more minor characters (e.g Riley, Bree, etc.) because I thought that they went a little overboard on giving them so much exposure since the movie would've been more watchable and could still stand on its own even without having them around like, every ten minutes, but then i realized that some of those who watch the translation of this story on screen don't even read the books, so giving them a little more taste on the feel of this characters were okay, so that they can further understand why they are there in the first place.

Contrary to most feedback, the action scenes were quite excellent in my opinion. It wasn't really fast-phased, as most of the reactions I have seen, or heard or read because I honestly thought that the fight scenes were actually condensed excellently.

I wasn't able to really appreciate the movie because I was beside Cherry and we kept on reacting and giggling on the cheesiest and randomest stuff that was shown (which, our unfriendly stranger seatmate didn't find amusing at all, evident in the way she kept on giving us hard glares everytime we opened our mouths irrelevantly). But I guess, for something that didn't get my attention fully, it's worth watching a second time so that I can actually really see what people have been going on about this third installment that made most of them love it.

The best thing so far in this movie, had been Jacob's wittingly sarcastic one-liners ("Let's face it, I am hotter than you.") and Jasper's longer dialogues. I have noticed that he spoke more than five sentences this time around. HA HA. There is something un-evil from you after all, Rosenberg. The Victoria recasting had been barely noticeable, I must admit. It's just that, people have been too focused on the "love" aspect that they almost forgot about her. Even I found myself saying, "Oh yeah. I forgot, she's still alive and still one of the villains on this one." Teehee.

The incorporation of the flashbacks were very concise! I loved everything about it and was summed up in a way that didn't really miss out on the more major details.

BUT, they also had a tendency to make some of the scenes a lot more intense than they actually should have been.

So as for my recommendation?

I'd say, if you're a die hard Twilight saga fan, and Taylor Lautner's abs, then go see it if you haven't yet. But I think you've probably seen this movie like, thrice already if you're a super fan. For me, this is the best one so far.

But if you hate anything Twilight, I won't appeal for you to give it a chance and waste your money on the grounds of just giving you more reasons to hate it.:)

So there.:) Hope you enjoyed! Comments will be highly appreciated!:) Thank you!
